Obesity costs US companies $13 bln a year

Obesity and overweight conditions contribute as much as $93 bln to the nation’s yearly medical bill, according to National Business Group on Health. The total cost of obesity to US companies is estimated at more than $13 bln per year. This includes $8 bln for added health insurance costs, $2.4 bln for paid sick leave, $1.8 bln for life insurance and $1 bln for disability insurance. That translates into 39 mln lost work days, 239 mln days where work activity is restricted, 90 mln sick days or days in bed and 63 mln visits to physicians.
