Newspaper circulation declines 1.9%

The Newspaper Association of America said Audit Bureau of Circulations data showed average daily circulation of 47.4 mln at 814 daily newspapers, a decline of 1.9% from the same period a year ago. On Sunday, the average circulation was 51.1 mln at the 643 newspapers tracked, a decline of 2.5% from a year earlier. According to NAA, just 29% of all newspapers reporting data to ABC gained circulation in the six months ending March 31. As recently as 2000, telemarketing accounted for 43.4% of all new newspaper subscribers, but that figure fell to 39.1% in 2002 and 30.9% in 2004.
