Internet political spending up 853.8%, but still non-significant

Political spending on all forms of communications is expected to reach a record $2.68 bln this year, a 122.8% increase over the $1.2 bln spent in the 2000 presidential election year and a 65.8% jump from the $1.62 bln spent in the 2002 mid-term elections, according to PQ Media. Political advertising spending on the Internet in 2004 will still be a sliver of overall media spending. Nevertheless, the $25.3 mln expected to be spent represents an 853.8% increase from 2000. From 2000 to 2004, political spending increased 331.2% on cable TV and 151.4% on direct mail campaigns.
