Due to the Maxtor acquisition, leading HDD maker Seagate achieved a 5.1% market share gain in Q2 2006 compared to the first. Seagate accounted for 34.1% of the 98.6 mln disk drives shipped worldwide in Q2 2006. Number-two-ranked HDD maker Western Digital Corp. (WDC) upped its share to 19.5% in the Q2 2006 compared to 18.5% in Q1 2006. Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) easily held onto its 3rd place ranking with a 15.1% share, up from 14.4% in Q1 2006. Samsung Electronics climbed into 4th place in Q2 2006, up from fifth in Q1 2006, with a 10.5% share of HDD unit shipments, up from 8.6% in the first.
