37% of laptop plan to buy a WLAN card, 30% have one

According to In-Stat/MDR, 37% of people with notebook computers are not currently using a wireless PC card, but plan to, while 30% currently use one. In-Stat/MDR bases its estimates on surveys conducted with 1,448 members of its wireless panel, 95% of which is living in the US. In-Stat notes that 56% of those people who plan to get a wireless PC card say they will get a WLAN PC card and 16% say they will get a WWAN PC card. The Dell-Oro Group also believes the wireless LAN market will grow over the coming years, with the 802.11 market rising by 23% this year generating $2.2 billion in revenues. Specifically, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) projects spending on Wi-Fi services to grow from $48 million this year to $270 million by the end of 2007. Datamonitor projected in September 2003 that there would be 23.3 million public WLAN hotspot users worldwide by 2006.
