$2 bln worth of digital tracks sold in 2006

Global digital music sales almost doubled in 2006 to around $2 bln, or around 10% of all sales, but failed to compensate for an overall decline in sales of CDs, IFPI said. Growth in digital sales has slowed compared to 2005, when sales nearly tripled to $1.1 bln from $380 mln in 2004. Single track downloads totaled nearly 795 mln in 2006, up 89% on the 420 mln digital singles sold in 2005. The United States accounts for the bulk of those sales, with 582 mln single tracks sold digitally in 2006, up 65% on 2005.
