US newspaper circulation down 1.9% for daily, 2.5% for Sunday in the first half of 2005

Audit Bureau of Circulations says daily newspaper circulation dropped 1.9% and 2.5% decline on Sundays in the first half of 2005, compared with the first half of 2004. These are the largest circulation losses for industry in more than 10 years. Los Angeles Times reports daily circulation fell 6.5%,to 907,997, and Sunday circulation dropped 7.9%; Chicago Tribune says its average weekday circulation fell 6.9%, to 573,743, and Sunday fell 4.7%, to 953,815; Wall Street Journal says weekday circulation declined 0.8%, to about 2.07 mln; USA Today held steady with average circulation of about 2.8 mln; New York Times posts 0.2% gains; daily circulation rose 1.14 mln and Sunday circulation reached about 1.68 mln.
