Taiwanese notebook exports grew 40% in the first half of 2005

Although Q2 is a traditional weak season for notebook PCs, in Q2 2005 worldwide shipment volume saw a larger increase than forecasted as major brands tried to increase their market share by using low-price strategies, strengthening the desktop replacement effect. Taiwanese notebook PC ODM/OEM makers profited from this trend as well. Market Intelligence Center estimated the Taiwanese notebook PC shipment volume and value reached 20 mln units and $13.1 bln in the first half of 2005, which represents year-on-year growth of 40%. Shipment value grew sequentially as shipment volume increased in Q2 2005. ASP (Average Selling Price) fell as the price of key components decreased, but the growing share of full systems slowed down this drop in ASP. Taiwanese notebook PC shipment value reached approximately $7 bln, leading to year-on-year growth of 44.6%.
