Americans charged $1.8 trillion on credit cards in 2005

US consumers spent more than $1.8 trillion on credit cards in 2005, according to CardWeb.com. Household debt grew to $830 bln in 2005 from $59 bln in 1980, according to Federal Reserve data. The average American household had 120% more credit-card debt in 2004 at $2,200 than it did in 1992, according to the Federal Reserve.
