$600 mln spent on external hard drives in 2006

Americans spent $600 mln on external hard drives in 2006, an increase of 53% over 2005, according to NPD. Consumers bought 739.7 mln gigabytes of hard-drive storage space 2006, more than 11 times as much as they did in 2003. The average price for an external hard drive fell to $141 last year, from $197 in 2003, while the amount of storage space on the drives doubled.
