$4 bln spent globally on antivirus in 2005
Worldwide antivirus total software revenue totaled $4 bln in 2005, a 13.6% increase from 2004 revenue, according to Gartner. The market was relatively evenly split between the enterprise and consumer segments, with the enterprise segment at a 51.5% market share and the consumer segment with 48.5% of the market in 2005. The antivirus software market is a mature market with the top three vendors accounting for 86% of the market in 2005 Symantec continued to dominate the market with a 53.6% market share. McAfee and Trend Micro followed with 18.8% and 13.8% market share, respectively. Although Panda Software only garnered 3.2% of the market in 2005, its strong presence in the European small and midsize business (SMB) market helped push it to 23.9% growth.
